| Bed Stuy, Crown Hts, Flatbush, & Bushwick No Fee Apartment Rentals Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn's largest African-American neighborhood, was formed after a merging of two rural communities: "Bedford" and "Stuyvesant Heights" in 1931. Famous past residents include baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Bed-Stuy is home to the Simmons African Arts Museum, (718/230-0933) which hosts an amazing private collection of contmporary African art and masks. Bushwick was one of the six original towns of Brooklyn. It was founded in 1661 by Peter Stuyvesant as "Boswijck," or "town in the woods." During the mid 1800s, Bushwick was home to "Brewer's Row," 14 breweries in a span of 14 city blocks, including, Rheingold. Bushwick is bordered by Bedford-Stuyvesant on the west, Williamsburg on the north, and Ridgewood, Queens to the northeast. Bushwick was devasted by looting and arson in the blackout of 1977. Now a predominately African-American and Latino community, Bushwick is seeing an emergence of retail stores and single family homes. Crown Heights, bordering Bedford-Stuyvesant and Lefferts Gardens, is home to the famous Brooklyn Children's Museum, the first museum created specifically for children when it was founded in 1899. The mix of African-Americans and Hasidic residents in Crown Heights has suffered tensions in the past, culminating in the Crown Heights riots in August of 1991. Since then, local community efforts like Project Cure have worked to foster harmony and cooperation among the varied racial groups. Every September, the neighborhood, also home to a thriving Caribbean community, hosts a sizzling West Indian Carnival Parade packed with music, floats and energy. Flatbush, the neighborhood starting from the area closest to Prospect Park, was one of Brooklyn's original six towns and its history is reflected beautifully at the Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church established by Peter Stuyvesant in 1654. Its Tiffany windows are inspiring. On burgeoning Cortelyou Road, check out Vox Pop(718/940-2084), a coffee house/performing arts space/publishing house, with its fair trade coffee, large offering of independent publications and its community-minded political, literary and social events. Also worth the trip is the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts (718/951-4500) on the Brooklyn College campus. The Center is renowned for excellent musical and theatrical shows.
