What happens if I am late on my rent?
Well, given the tough economic times that New York is experiencing along with the rest of the country, you're not
alone if this is a concern. While some landlords have specific policies regarding late payment outlined in the
lease, others take things on a case by case basis.
Whatever the situation may be, the best thing to do is to maintain communication with the landlord. You should
call to acknowledge that you are in fact late, tell the owner or manager know why you have not paid the rent, and
let them know when you anticipate making payment.
Landlords are not eager to charge late fees or evict tenants and are oftentimes forgiving when the lines of
communication are kept open!
